I'm starting a newsletter!
Howdy, folks!
I decided to start a newsletter. If you’re reading this in your email inbox, that means you’re already subscribed which means that you’re pretty cool! If you’re reading this on my blog then you’re still cool, but you can become even cooler by getting on my mailing list.
All you need to do is send me an email and I’ll add you to the list. Otherwise, reading on the website works great either way.
What is this newsletter?
I know that I can be a bit wild-brained and move through a lot of deep interests and hobbies pretty quickly. I like sharing what I’m doing and learning, but I have a hard time filtering it down into something digestible for a non-insane person.
This is an attempt to make it as easy as possible for you to be my friend and know what’s going on in my life.
Recent News

- I took a few days off and went solo overloading through the west Utah desert. It was incredible! I haven’t documented it anywhere besides some photos and videos, though I did live-stream from a camping site on top of a mountain!
- I’m slowly building my own social media platform, this newsletter is the latest experiment. So far my experiments with Likes and Replies have exceeded my expectations. More on that to come...
- I turned 34.
- My beard is longer than it’s ever been.
- I published my personal testimony of Jesus Christ. This was very difficult to write and even more difficult publish. Even now, it’s difficult to let you know that I did it.
- Related, I’ve been teaching the Sunday School class at my church for the last few years and I actually really enjoy it. I teach once a month so let me know if you ever want to come!
- I published the first part of a science fiction series I’ve been working on for the better part of my life. It’s called "Prizem Part 1: After Oaisys (AO)” and it would actually mean the absolute world to me if you’d read it.
- Fictionist, one of my favorite bands released a new album and I wrote a review of it, which includes some personal biographical info about me as well.
Spotlight
Since this is the first release of the newsletter, I took the time to go through and try and document where my current creative output is.
The places where I’m most active are:
- Mastodon
- the reactor core
- free-flowing thoughts
- memes
- Catskull.net
- How-To’s
- Whenever I figure out how to do something difficult, I try to take time to write down some instructions. This has saved my bacon multiple times.
- Development project logs
- In other words “here’s a random thing I made"
- Personal Essays
- Attempts at earnest and sincere expression of personal beliefs and ideas. This is my favorite part of my output.
- Recipes
- I make dinner at least once a week for my family and I like to make some things, so I started keeping track of what I make. I hope to keep adding more recipes as I find them!
- Quotes
- "These are various quotes, adages, laws, idioms, sayings, and other things that I have found particular insights into the nature of human existence."
- Notes
- “Notes to self”, mostly random links or thoughts I want to remember. I guess it’s like a personal, slow-moving social media feed.
- About
- An “about me” page I update regularly, including over *96* documented interests and counting, a half-decent biography of my life, and other things about me you might find interesting or bizarre.
- Uses
- Just a list of things that I use, including a diagram of every wire plugged into anything in my office.
- Playlist
- A weekly playlist me and a few friends put out each week. We’ve been going on three years.
- Occasionally we get guest contributors. This week, we got a guy from New York that was in a band called “The Twin Atlas” to give us his top 3 picks! I just emailed him and he replied, imagine that.
- You can even browse the “Master List" with all (at the time of writing) *1259* songs.
- YouTube
- Purely recreational, not aspirational.
- A few videos I’m proud of:
- “I wrote my wife a love letter in Windows 98”
- “OWC Express 1M2 Unboxing & Review [plus pizza review!🍕]”
- “How to play PS1 games on 3DS”
- I like to live stream development and video game activity. I usually play something from my childhood, like Prince of Persia or The Lost Vikings. Most of the time I’m stream-bombed by at least 1 kid, sometimes 3 or 4. Davey is actually pretty good at Prince of Persia!
- Recently I ported OpenWrt, an open-source networking operating system, to a random router I bought on Amazon, and I live streamed the entire process.
- This is where I post the music I make, as well as normal life-instagram stuff. If you’re interested in watching a live stream of me playing music, subscribe to this!
- It’s private, so just send a request to follow.
- Discord
- I really enjoy hanging out in The Bullpen discord server. I’m in a few others as well. Should I make a discord for catskull? When you’re yelling into the void, what’s one more?
